In the interests of bolstering that elusive yet all-important on-line presence I recently signed myself up as an artist on MySpace. It amazes me what a simple inde band based website can become. It’s more complicated (and I mean ‘after much serious thought’ complicated) to even figure out how to get to the page to sign up as an artist account as opposed to a hanginout chatinwithmafriends account. Just searching around the site and reading the vernacular I can see that I’m in for a world of hurt if I try speaking to anyone.
Another bad habit I’ve gotten into is googling my name to see how I’m doing with my elusive on-line presence. In doing this I learn that I’ve clinched the #1 spot for my name and that there are a few interesting dopplegangers out there for me. Among the interesting ones is a Christian radio DJ who recovered from something or other and a successful college level ice-hockey defenseman. That was the position I played back when I did. And if you search down a couple of pages it appears that this defenseman got his start in the Saskatchewan Junior League. If he weren’t 6′1″ and 220 lbs this concidence might explain why I wake up feeling so tired some mornings.
Having to write an album/artist bio (biographical information intended to sell said album/artist) is much like composing a heavily padded resume. The idea is that I’m developing my brand story or the thing that will make a potential fan remember me as opposed to say, uhm, Cher. In other words I need the brand story so word will spread that I’m compelling enough to actually listen to. Welcome to the age of ’sounds good to my eyes’. I’ll post a link with the resulting bio just in case anyone’s interested in the compelling and original artist that is me.
It has come to my attention that a (slightly pressure-fractured) copy of ‘Daryl Pierce’ is on sale for bargain basement prices on ebay. This is at once flattering and disturbing since someone out there thinks that this commodity is a possible reseller and yet obviously not of much personal interest to them. The fact is it’s likely from one of the many discs that every Inde artist should, and usually does send out to every college, community and independant station that should (are you listening CFCR) play interesting music. I’m sure we could easily fill up a lesser portion of the space between here and the moon with all of the ignored magneto-optical coasters sent off as free and promotional copies.
At any rate the selling price is cheap and it looks to be the genuine artical so if someone’s been on the fence about buying a copy, by all means go ahead and snatch it up.
Well, first post. I’ll keep it short and simple. This weblog effort is about interaction so I’m hoping some of you people will take the moment to let me know who you are, where you’re from and what you’re thinking right now, at this moment. Myself I’m thinking that the Saskatchewan wiki page is a surprising read (I’m from Saskatchewan).
On to another thought, I wish I had a great name for this enterprise like Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog (a la Arrested Development) so I’m very open to entertaining suggestions. That’s all for now.
